My Uncle Loren who lives in Hannibal, MO (Mark Twain’s home town) surprised me with a wonderful early Christmas gift yesterday. A large box arrived, and when I read the return address, it didn’t have his name on it. When I saw Hannibal, MO on it, I wondered…could it be from Uncle Loren? Who else lives in Hannibal? Then when I opened the box and saw the top of an eagle’s head, I was so excited. It really was Christmas!
Loren has been carving with chain saws for quite a few years. He has a story of when he first started carving and tried to make carved bears and eagles, etc. If he made a mistake, he turned them into mushrooms. He said he has a yard full of mushrooms.
He’s really got some impressive sculptures. And to make them out of a crude, bulky chain saw. Wow – that’s carving. I would think the details would be the most difficult – just controlling these machines.
The difference is if I carved the exact same eagle with a chisel and mallet, it would probably take me 10 times longer to get it finished.
I still think I’ll stick with the hand chisels. Those noisy machines scare me.
Thanks Uncle Loren!
