I have been working on a smaller project the past few days. It will be a small wall sconce with a shell on the top and acanthus design below. It is only about 8″ tall and carved out of mahogany. It will be made in 2 separate pieces because my client wants me to make a mold of it with the option of putting a different detail on the bottom – so the designs can be interchangable.
The photo here is of the finished shell with me fitting the bottom section over the scroll so it fits snuggly together. It has been hollowed out to fit over the scroll. Tomorrow I hope to get much of the bottom design of the acanthus leaf finished. There will be a flat surface in the center of this design where a metal bracket will fit to hold a brass sconce. This whole piece will be gold leaf when finished.
The tease in this project will be getting the acanthus leaf to flow into the area above the scroll and coordinate that design transition. We’ll see…
