My father-in-law, David May (www.3dstudiocreations.com) has just completed making several light-weight walking heads for a local Mardi Gras Ball. They really turned out amazing. These are the ones you see in the parades setting on top of shoulders.
If you have ever seen the Charleston Mayor, you will see the very clear resemblance. I watched him make the Shrek, and it was absolutely amazing how he put it all together. When he started you sort of scratch your head and wonder “how in the world is that ever going to look like Shrek?” and then it does! Magic! He really is brilliant at “seeing” the image before it is completed and then figure out clever ways of making this massive head light enough to put on your shoulders without making you collapse under its weight.
He is going to get involved in making the floats also – that should be a lot of fun to watch.
If you are wanting to be involved in next year’s Mardi Gras parade, he is taking orders now!
Now I wonder just what one of those heads would weigh if Mary carved it out of Spanish cedar….hmmmmm
