This is a project I carved for a client who wanted a duplicate carving for a matching headboard. This is a very deep relief of a classical European style carving of a leaf and nut - likely a German design.

Consider Using a Casting
It is often very handy having something 3-dimensional in front of you to copy while you carve. Being able to see all the “un-knowables” such as depth, subtle cuts, etc. is tremendously helpful. Photos are not always able to show depth, and quite often shadows create a false illusion of shape. I have a casting available for this lesson. ...HERE...
