About Mary

photo of Mary MayHello! Thank you for joining me on these carving adventures.

My woodcarving journey started back in 1992. After travelling to Europe and being fascinated with the amazing and intricate woodcarvings in the various churches and castles I visited, I was inspired to learn all there was about this ancient craft. Since then I have had opportunities to study with master carvers around the world – England, Greece and Malaysia – with the desire to learn everthing I could about the traditional ways this art was created.

Since moving to Charleston, SC I have developed a business called Cornerstone Creations, LLC where I specialize in carving the details for period furniture reproductions, architectural decorations, fireplace mantels, church furniture and sculptures. While carving these various pieces, I endeavor to keep the integrity of the traditional styles and carving techniques alive and well.

I have opportunities to travel around the country and teach at a variety of woodworking schools, including Marc Adam’s School of Woodworking, Roy Underhill’s The Woodwright’s School, and Kelly Mehler’s School of Woodworking. I am also an active member in the Society of American Period Furniture Makers, and travel to various locations to teach carving workshops to people who are interested in adding carving details on their period furniture reproductions.

As I look back through this woodcarving journey, I can see how the Lord has blessed me in so many ways. He has given me this gift of carving and I truly desire to share what I have learned with as many people as possible.
