About the Teacher

Mary May is a professional woodcarver and is owner of Cornerstone Creations, LLC. She has studied woodcarving at a variety of places around the world - England, Malaysia & Greece, and has had many opportunities to study the traditional techniques of the European masters carvers. She specializes in making carvings for reproduction period furniture and teaches these techniques at several locations throughout the US, as well as in her home town of Charleston, SC. Mary has produced instructional DVDs which include carving the ball and claw foot, the acanthus leaf, and both the concave and convex Newport shells. She has recently appeared as a guest on The Woodwright's Shop with Roy Underhill. Mary is a member of the Society of American Period Furniture Makers.

About the Class
This class will show the process of carving an oak leaf in relief:

- how to sharpen your gouges
- how to draw an oak leaf design onto wood
- how to carve the background lower
- how to shape the oak leaf with a variety of curved gouges
- demos on a variety of other tricks and techniques

Materials Provided
- wood
- clamps for holding down wood
- carbon paper

Materials for Students to Bring
- Wood or metal carving mallet (optional)
- Any sharpening stones or sharpening equipment you have

Set of beginner gouges as follows:

5mm v-chisel
#3, 3mm
#3, 6mm
#4, 12mm
#3, 16mm
#7, 14mm
