This is a brief introduction to "Carving a Christmas Springerle Mold."
It's Christmas in July! This single episode lesson shows how to carve three different counter-relief or intaglio cookie molds of my own design for springerle cookies. It's a challenge to carve backwards, but getting a jump start on the holidays is never a bad idea when it comes to handmade gifts. The molds make as neat a present as the cookies will. Try your own designs. The possibilities are endless and these are so much fun!

I don’t have access to Apple wood. What would be the next best wood to use?
Hi Joyce, Any kind of fruit wood will work – cherry works well, and is probably the most available. Have fun! Just be careful you don’t use a wood that is toxic if you are going to actually make cookies.
Hi Mary, I purchased this lesson and it looks great. However, I’d like to make the mold in a smaller size – perhaps 80% of the template size. I’m assuming I’d need smaller tools? With that in mind, what size tools would you suggest or how would I figure this out? Thank you!
Hi Lisa,
It shouldn’t make too much of a difference at 80% smaller. If you did want to adjust the tool size, maybe 1mm smaller for each tool, but I wouldn’t really be too concerned about that. Enjoy!
