Hi Mary I am retired and i took up woodwork as a hobby and enjoy it I am trying to learn wood carving but i think i am trying to do to much as i have got a lathe and a band saw. jig saw and now a set of carving chisels .do you think i should just consentrate on carving to get it right

Hello Michael,
Welcome to the school! I have always tried to focus on carving, while touching on some of the other skills (turning, finishing, even stained glass). But there are some who can dive deep into many different areas and achieve them all successfully. I have always found that focusing on one skill will definitely help to master that, without getting to distracted and spread too thin. But if you are wanting to carve on turnings, then I don’t think that would be too excessive to learn turning and carving. The 2 can go well together in many ways. Also the techniques of dealing with grain direction are similar. See how it goes! And have fun no matter what you dive into.
