Have you experimented with a DMT Wave for sharpening gouges? I have no sharpening stones yet for the inside radii of gouges and would appreciate having your input before I make a purchase.

I do have the DMT Wave. I believe that is 1200 mesh (or grit). It works OK, as long as you are very careful not to overdo it. With it being such an aggressive grit, it can easily re-shape the inside of the gouge. I have contacted them and asked if they can make it [...]

I have purchased the DMT stones that you are using but I do have a few questions concerning your sharpening process. How much pressure and what angle to the stone should be maintained? By the angle I mean horizontal to the stone and not vertically. It seems that you are @ 90 deg and your pressure looks rather light. In my attempts I seem to be arcing a bit , maybe it’s just repetitive practice.

I have a set of diamond sharpening “stones”. I was wondering how you keep yours so clean. My stones are turning black from the build up of residual metal. How can I clean them and restore them to the original state?

You should just be able to clean the stones with soap and water – maybe use a scrub brush? I have never had any problems so far with mine doing this. Make sure you use only water or water and a little “green” dish soap.

A good place to start is with my video about "Sharpening a Curved Gouge." If you take your time, and don’t try to rush it, you should be fine. The difficulties usually come when the process is rushed (tipping the tool up too much and only the edge is sharpened, for example). It’s a [...]
