A Few Things I've Recently Completed

I finished these three carvings recently and thought I'd share.

I did the grape leaves because I wanted to experiment with freeing certain elements, such as the stems, from the background as much as possible. I did manage to carve one down too much and broke it off so I glued another piece in and re-carved it.

The acorn dragon was from a pattern taken from the UK magazine Wood Carving. It's a deep relief and I also freed some of the carving completely from the background but not as much as the grape leaves.

The cat I just completed for a stocking stuffer for my daughter for Christmas.

All three are bass wood.

Thanks for sharing! That's some impressive vines (what kind of microscopic tools did you have to use?). The cat is very cute also and I'm sure your daughter will love it!

I used my Dockyard tools. A few years ago Dockyard said they were going to discontinue making the micro tools and someone on eBay was selling a complete set for about $150. So I bought it. Well Dockyard decided to make the tools again and based on what they're asking for a set of five or six tools I got a real bargain. Great tools for detail work.

Im just venturing into relief carving and just keep being amazed at the talent Im seeing and am so glad to have found Mary May and the sight. Ive done some Antarsia crafting which is fun but admit I was always a little intimidated with the thought of carving but took the plunge and wish I had done this long ago. Your carvings are inspiring. I love the intricacy. You mentioned a stem broke out and you described how you mended it and continued on. Thats motivating.
