Beaded oval Gratitude

The basic design was borrowed from Mary's lesson about a beaded oval fireplace panel, resized to 15 inches by 6 3/4 inches.  The wood is cherry, which I find delightful to carve. The lettering is my own, similar to what I've used in other pieces.

It's not done yet. It has a couple of coats of shellac with more to come after I gild the lettering.

That's beautiful, Bob.

Well done! It must have been a challenge laying out the beads.

Oh yeah! That's the way it's done! The wood I carved mine in was poplar (no hiding that poplar is one of my LEAST favorite carving woods) so I think cherry would be a much better wood for this project. Looks great!

That's a great looking panel Bob, and great choice on cherry...it definitely is fun to carve.

Thanks All!

Tim, the bead layout is easy. Two ovals mark the inner and outer extremes of the beads. They are set to the width that a #7 6mm gouge can conveniently carve a bead, actually 8mm. Then, set a pair of dividers to 8mm and simply walk around the oval. Odds are very high, with that many beads, that very little adjustment will be needed.

Great work Bob!  I'm definitely going to have to try Cherry next... Thanks for sharing.
