Bunny in Balloon

Back in 1985 when my wife and I were expecting our first child I decided to make a cradle for him out of cherry. I planned to do a whimsical carving on each side, and asked my mother, an excellent artist, to sketch the designs. I didn't know much about carving and only completed one side before our son was due. I had to finish the cradle in a hurry.

My niece just had a baby girl named Maya, and I wanted to make something special for her. I still have the drawings my mother made for the cradle, including this bunny in a balloon. I carved it in a piece of straight-grained cherry from near the center of the tree, so the grain leaves concentric rings around the balloon. (Pure luck!)
