Carving a rope boarder

I am starting a carving of an anchor and shield. It is bordered by chain and rope. I have done chain carving before but never a rope boarder. Any recomendations?

This is my project. It will be a relief carving. The blank is 24" x 24" and the work is about 22" H x 20" W x 2" thick. I got the blank from Wilcox Wood Works. Very nice, clean, blemish free Bass wood laminate. You can see the chain, but outlining the anchor is a rope motif. By the time I get to it, it will be a small accent. Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi Dan,

I do have a lesson that shows how to carve rope molding as a part of the Charleston Rice Bed series. It's just a short part of that lesson, and is toward the end of this lesson: https://www.marymaycarving.com/carvingschool/2016/02/17/carving-a-charleston-rice-bed-post-part-4-carving-the-necking-with-water-leaves-introduction/

But... this is something that I should make as an individual lesson. One day...

I would love to see how your project is progressing! The most recent Marine Emblem lesson will definitely help.
