First-ever carving

Here is my finished first-ever carving project. I started carving, then I found the marymaycarving school website and started taking the tutorial. The wood is basswood, which I then toasted with a torch to add some highlights and stained with a minwax gunstock color stain. A few lessons learned:
Sharpen the tools first, and keep them sharpened; I had difficulty with tear-out.
I bought a set of small palm gouges; I think this project was a bit too large in scale for the smaller gouges I used. Also, the pattern I picked was actually a leather carving pattern, and may have too much detail for this wood.
Transfer paper would have made life easier.
Feedback welcome.

Christopher, That is a great start! You've got the overlapping concept, and it really looks "alive". The colors make it seem autumnal also.
Save that first carving. Here is mine ?
