l’ve just finished doing a carving in mahogany. I wanted to make it look old so used a dark oak stain and am really pleased with the effect. Has anyone tried painting their carvings white and then distressing them - I’m keen to try this next. I’ve got the carving bug for sure - fairly new to carving so any tips gratefully received with regard to my carving.

Really nice design, like the finishing. Hope you ate all the grapes.
Paint could fill any crevices in your carving @ effect any shadows? Maybe you could use Liming White? Before you try on a carving, experiment diluting different paints/stains.
I think Mary uses paint here https://www.marymaycarving.com/carvingschool/2017/10/18/carving-a-cornucopia/
If you do a google search on 'antique finishing steel wool vinegar' it might be something you could use. A friend of mine has tried and the results were cool.

Lucy, that is beautiful! Great way to incorporate a lot of elements into one design. You might want to check out the finishing process I used for the calla lilies in relief. It is more of a white wash paint, but you could experiment. And Greg- great idea to practice - NOT on your final carving and experiment.

Thankyou both! Yes a white wash paint certainly sounds like the best idea - I've seen some carvings limed and then waxed which looks really good. I loved the finish on the calla lilies - really subtle and different. Greg, they are gooseberries!! They were left over from jam making. Again, thanks to you and Mary for your feedback.
