Gryphon...

Page 1 of 2Next

I carved a gargoyle a few months ago by Shawn Cipa. I had fun carving it, so I thought I would give another of his creatures a go. Just finished roughing the gryphon out.

Looking good!  You are much neater than I am.

I think that is a Lee Valley carving vise peeking out at the bottom?  I really like mine.  At first, I was having problems with things loosening up, the screws going into the wood.  I solved that by putting a bit of double sided tape in between.

Thanks for that post, going to have to look up that reference!

That's a challenging one, but it's looking good! 3-dimensional pieces always create different issues. Good luck! Looking forward to seeing it finished.

Thank you Mary! I will put up a pic when it's completed.

And Ted, it is the Lee Valley carvers vise. I've used it a lot and like it. My only gripe is that even though I tighten the crap out of the handle, my carvings tend to abruptly twist if I exert too much pressure while carving towards the outside edges. It's caused a couple of oh s*** moments for me!

Almost at cleanup stage...still need to make some fixes where it just doesn't look right and round off some leftover squared edges here and there.

Nice. Very regal!

What a great job.!

Thank you!

I think I'm done with this guy. Mr Cipa does a wonderful job painting his, but since I'm no expert on putting acrylics on wood, I'll probably just seal him up and find a spot for him on the library bookshelves.

Having trouble adding more than one pic to a post...it just shows all 3 of the same photo. Here's another.
