Hanging Carvings: hardware? Keyhole slots?

What are the best practices for hanging wood carvings? I used a sawtooth hanger for the Celtic clover knot I did, but I'm afraid for more detailed/fragile works, the post-carving hammering could damage all that hard work

I wondered about a keyhole slot made with a router instead. But I wasn't sure about depth, and how that might make carving trickier because if you carve too deep it could go into the keyhole..

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
