Need advice on my next chisel purchase!

Hi everyone! Hi Mary May!

Been working on the country scene carving and am in love with the frame and shadow box style. Going to sketch up some similar scenes and do a few more. By far my favorite project yet.

My current chisel collection is the Mary May Beginners Set of #3/6, #3/14, #5/14, #7/6, #7/14, and #12/6 as well as a #3/2 I purchased later for tiny fixes. I am currently torn between the #1/14, #3/18, #5/6, and #12/3. My amazing mother got her carved pineapple for Christmas and loved it so much, she wanted to add 2 chisels to my collection of my choosing to help me grow my knowledge and collection.

Out of those 4 or any others that you think are more critical to have for the country scene type of carving (or just in general must haves), which would be your top 2 next picks for the eager carver? 🙂

Thank you!

Sienna,

Good to see a new carver, excited to learn the craft, it will be something you should enjoy the rest of your life.

Chisel choice?  I would recomend the #1/14 Two Cherries from Chipping away,  and the #2/18,  both on Mary's add-on list #1.  the 1/14 you'll need the set in and clean up the boarders of the inset framing, and the 2/18 for smoothing out the background.

After that just follow Mary's add on list or the recomendations that come with each lessons.  Soon you'll get the feel for tools and will find yourself reaching for a #??? then time to add it to your list.  I've been carving from Mary's lessons now for about a year and still keep adding chisels to my list.  I buy one to three each month as I can afford them to build up my set. It's like Christmas every month!

Mary usually responds within a day unless she's away teaching,  she'll be on soon to advise further.

Hello Sienna, Welcome!

I agree with the #1, 14mm as a "go to" chisel. I often use this to round surfaces that other gouges won't fit. I think my second choice would be the #5, 6mm. The #3, 14mm can be used in place of the #3, 18mm for a while, and the 6mm v-chisel can be used instead of the 3mm v-chisel. Just keep putting gouges on Christmas and birthday lists, and eventually you'll have all that you need (but can we ever really have enough??)

Have fun!
