Hi all, I’m Harry. Just joined Mary’s site this week. I’m not a beginner but haven’t carved in years. I mostly carved in the round. I quickly carved the flower to get my feet wet then went onto the Camellia. I could spend a lot more time on it but I want to move on to my next project. Don’t know what yet.

Welcome Mike and Harry!

Great start! Onto bigger and better :)) Have fun!

Hi everybody, just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Rand and I am so glad to have found Mary’s carving school. I am a new member and look forward to learning from practice and from my fellow classmates!

I was a carving student under a master carver named Bela Ferencz in 1990. I was fortunate to learn from him for about 7 years. Great lessons, wish they continued! Bela moved back to Hungary and I went in a different direction with my art. 22 years later, I’m ready to get back to carving and have been working on a relief for a few months now.   With very few chisels I’m chipping away and learning by my mistakes! I’ll post a few pics of carving I’m working on. Having trouble uploading pics from my iPhone due to size?? I’ll figure it out. Lol

Happy carving all!

Hi Randy

that sounds impressive and exciting having worked under a master carver!  Look forward to seeing some of your work, all best,

Lucy

Thanks for the kind words Lucy! I did a ton of watching, then drawing before I was able to pick up a chisel. Bela was old school! Crawl before trying to walk!

I will post up some pics soon when I figure it out! Lol

Success, I figured out how to change size of photos and upload! LoL . I posted 3 pictures of project I’m working on.

Current project is a relief of a Hawaiian canoe scene in 1.75 inch thick basswood. About half way finished with relief. Need to figure out how to turn stick figures into more realistic paddlers and know when to stop going deeper and deeper into wood! Carving the frame will follow. Happy carving everyone!

Wow what a subject!  Love it, it’s coming along fabulously.  Can’t stop looking at it, You can creat such movement using the different depths and this is something I need to try and incorporate in my carvings. Thanks for sharing,

Lucy

  1. Thanks Lucy for checking out my project.  You can definitely create the illusion of depth in your work by drawing your subject in perspective and not flat. Use a drawing that is in perspective and you’ll be amazed how you create the illusion of depth. You don’t have to go deep into the wood. Not sure if it’s the correct order but I start with object in carving closest to me and work down to next object. I started with fish, then shark, then canoe, paddlers, sail, and finally mountains. Sorry! I can go on and on!! Lol
  2. You can do it, do a little test run.

Thanks Randy, I’m certainly going to give it a go - might try Mary’s house scene.  I will let you know how I get on.  I’ve just finished a piece in mahogany which is my standard type of carving (attached it I hope!) but I really do need to start pushing myself towards more challenging projects like yours or even ‘in the round’ which is something else I’ve been shying away from.

best, Lucy
