Recently retired and want to get back to woodworking. Trying to carve the Newport Concave and convex shells. What backbent gouges would be of help. Someday I'd like to make the secretary desk bit just practicing on the convex shell and concave shells. Having a bit of trouble and was considering the backbent gouge. Whatsizes would be of help on the Newport concave shell.

"Carey:
Al Breed, a period furniture maker of the North East USA published a list of tools he uses to carve the convex and concave Newport shells. If you wish I can advise of all the tools he suggests but the back bent he recommends is a # 4 or #5 x 12 mm.
Hope this helps.

Those sizes would definitely work. Make sure these back-bent gouges have a pretty aggressive curve to the bend in order for it to reach into that "scoop" area.
