Seated Guitar Player

I play the guitar and have been wanting to incorporate a guitar in a carving for a while. I got this idea from a photo of Canadian folk singer Judy Collins I found on the net. I modeled it in clay first so I could get an idea of proportion and how everything would fit together. The clay model was very helpful in the initial roughing-out stage.

Wood is butternut though I wish now I would have used basswood. I still have quite a bit of detail work to do especially in refining the facial features. Probably the hardest carving I've ever done.

Sorry the above picture came out sideways.

Just click on the picture to see it oriented as the original was

Very nice job.  Really looks like a lot of work to me.

That's looking good... and a lot of work! Sometimes it's easier to carve something larger than smaller, as this carving is. I'm guessing you have had to pull out the micro tools. Clay modeling definitely helps with something as complicated as this - just to get the proportions correct.

Micro tools, Dremel, rifflers, probably every tool I own has been used on this. Certainly has been a learning experience.
