Swiss Pfeil on ebony handles

I've posted a couple of times about these,  now that I can do the pic's thought I'd share them with,,

I've only done this to the smaller sizes,  #3-6mm. and down,  11-2, 2-2, 3-3,,, etc.

Can still use two hands on them, I seem to have a little better control for detail work.  All the rest of my chisels still on their full size handles.

Michael,

I must have missed your other posts about those...they look amazing. Did you turn those yourself, or purchase them? I’ve been thinking of something like that, but am a horrible turner. Great job!

The ebony handles are from Luthiers Mercantile International,  part # CHES, sm ebony handle $6:50 ea.

It takes some work fitting them, I also grind, file and sand down to 2000gr, and polish with stropping compound, ALL BY HAND,  NO Lathe. the brass ferrule to taper from the handle to the bolister on the chisel.

Will be glad to give more detail on fitting handles if your not familiar with it,  Note on the Ebony's they can crack easyly so fit them down to within 1/8 in. before seatting them home with rubber mallet.  The tangs on the swiss need to be filed sharp, and step drill out the ebony's. also the swiss have a metal ridge under the bolister that needs to be filed flat with a needle file so it will seat flat to the brass.

It takes me a couple of hrs to fit each one, it's some work, but they are sure nice when finnished.  I got the info from Grahm Bull or Dick Onions , book can't remember which, would have to go out to shop to look.

Good luck and feel free to ask any more ???

Hi Michael,

Beautiful and sweet! Definitely worth the work. Dick Onians was my carving instructor for a few months when I attended the City and Guilds College in London. He is a great carver.

Thank's for the "like's",

Mary, you did well to follow your dreams and passion for woodcarving,  to study under the carvers that you have!!

I was looking to carve Dick Onion's linenfold panel in his book, and looking at instruction for "in the round" carving.  I've got an Angel to carve, a late Christmas present, lol.  maybe early for next year!

fitting blades to new handles is something i'd be interested in having links to.  i have some cheap blades i want to reshape, and make custom handles for.

Check out Woodcarvingworkshop1, How to Change Handles on Carving Tools, by; Chris Pye on You - Tube,  probably the best of the videos out there,  also look at Patrick Sullivan's making detail chisels, three part, has one on handles.
