Vase of flowers in walnut

I’ve just finished carving a design in walnut from a picture I found on the internet and thought I would share it. I think I’m pleased (so long as I stand back and don’t study it too closely - I think I woul never stop adjusting if I’m honest).  I’ve been carving for 1 year now and can honestly say that to a huge part of my life and happiness.  Please do give me any constructive feedback as I’m still learning, learning, learning ........

Looks very nice Lucy. I think you are right to reach a point and then stop. Over tinkering can lead to mistakes. Be proud of your work and take your improved skills to the next carving.

Thank you Mike.  When I look back at my earliest carvings my urge is to run to my bench to improve them, but of course I don’t - it’s good to have a record of progression - you are so right - each new project hopefully reflects improvement!

Hi Lucy,

That is very nice. And walnut of all woods! That was a lot of work to remove that background. The surface looks very clean without many tool marks. Well done! I look forward to seeing more of what you carve.

How to know when to stop? Not sure if I can help you with that because I always want to work on it more. It helps more if you do it for a living and your hourly wage gets less and less (or if you are trying to limit the time for a video lesson). Those projects that I am just carving for myself can go on and on and on...

Hi Mary

Thank you!  The walnut was rather splintery too but I do so love walnut.  I’ve just finished a piece in mahogany in much shallower relief so it didn’t take so long to lower and get to the fun part of actual carving! I will attempt to attach it - yikes, I’m not good at this techno stuff.  Thanks Mary for your valued comments and your on line lessons which truly truly give me such inspiration.

So much inspiration from this forum. When I admire the work by members and by Mary May I'm just in awe. You really make the wheels spin. The lower picture answered one of my ponderings as to what do I do to finish meaning how you framed it.

Yes when does one say finished? I ask my wife.
