• From Cathy Reincke on Starting to Carve

I bought some Flexcut tools on the advice of a friend who does some amazing carving with them. After watching your videos, I feel that I would have more control had I bought the longer gouges, and I may reinvest. However, can you give any advice about using the shorter gouges?

      Hi Cathy,
This would be a great question for the forum. Will you consider asking this there also? You may get some helpful replies from other carvers.

You will definitely have more control with the longer handle gouges. But if you do decide to use the shorter gouges, these are often used with one hand. Just be careful that you do not have your other hand either holding the wood, or being anywhere on the blade side of the tool. It's just too easy for this to happen. There also is not as much control with only one hand holding the tool, but make sure you brace that one hand against the wood solidly. Just be careful!

To experiment is a good thing. I like your idea of further art by using different colors for the grass. Instead of grass, you could have wheat sheaves. Thanks for boosting creativity.
