• From Salko Safic on Carving a Philadelphia Acanthus - Episode 4

Since this is an old post I'm sure it still may benefit someone out there. You were in the ball park Mary but I would use higher gram strength hide glue as it's quick setting and then just press hard for a couple of minutes and without using clamps just let it set on it's own. The beauty of hide glue is that it will draw the carving in meaning just like clamps press the two together hide does the same thing. You can lightly clean as much squeeze out with water while it's still wet or you can clean it up after it has dried. Again hide glue cleans up excellent with water leaving no residue on the surface. You can't do that with PVA and no the water will not reactivate the glue.

Oh and almost forgot, the standard gram strength for furniture making is 192 and the highest is 250 which only gives you a few seconds working time.

Thank you Salko. I have heard of this, but have not tried it. I also heard that heat will release hide glue. I have recently been using double sided tape that golfers use to wrap their golf handles. Removing with lacquer thinner works amazing. I have not tested what happens after several months, as the double sided duct tape that I used to use a lot tends to dry out and become more difficult to release over time.

Could you provide the dimensions of your wood carving bench? (length, width, height, and thickness of top). I noticed you only have an end vice, do you use your other bench for that kind of work, or don't you use one. It is impossible to get this kind of information anywhere. Thanks Paul

      Hello Paul,
I do know that Lie-Nielsen sells these vices if you want to build your own. It is difficult to find them in pre-build benches these days. My bench is an Ulmia and I don't think these are being sold anymore. The only reason I don't use the other vice is that my workshop is too small and it is too cramped against the wall 🙂 But this process of using bench dogs and end vice works the best for flat relief carvings.

      Happy shopping!
