I carved a camellia flower in mahogany with the grain running vertical and it didn't look very good, so I am going to try horizontal with a lighter type of wood, i don't seem to be able to get your types of wood, Happy New Year.

      Hello Tom,
With the small amount of wood that is needed for carving, you should be able to get good carving wood online. Search "basswood" or "butternut" and there are a variety of suppliers. Just make sure the basswood is northern basswood (Minnesota, New York, Michigan, etc) because of the tighter grain.

    Hi Mary

I live in South Korea. So it is hard to buy a basic set of beginner. I finally found Pfeil chisels. But they are all straight type and 3 of them are 2mm bigger than you recommend. 6mm v, #3: 8mm, 16mm, #5: 16mm, #7: 6mm,14mm
That's why I am considering to buy the set from Canada. It takes a lot of time and money. Could you explain that fishtail is better than straight?
I hope to hear back from you soon.
    Happy New Year!

I found the answer of mine from the 30 amazing answers. English is not my mother tongue. So I understand your lesson slowly. But this site is really useful for me.
      Thanks.

Mary, I love your lessons, your patience and humor, I splurged today and purchased the starter tool set. Is the 6 mm v groove tool going to be overkill for this project? I'm going to have hit the flea markets and garage sales for the extra tools. Love the quote from Proverbs.

Thanks Gordon! I think the 6mm v-chisel should work fine. The only difference is that the outside corner may have a "softer" corner than a smaller v-chisel, so the cuts won't have as sharp of a "v" shape. Check out http://www.chippingaway.com for tools. They have just put together several "Mary May" carving tool sets of Pfeil gouges for a very reasonable price. Tell them you are my student and you will get an additional 10% off. I will be announcing this in the newsletter coming up this weekend.
