Hi Daniel,
Bob Easton here as technical support for Mary May's web sites.
Almost all lessons have templates included on the first episode, as mentioned on the Introduction page for each. ... just below the image or intro teaser video.
I was curious about what slip stones you would recommend to someone starting out. You show the oval, round and and v-slip in your video, do those three cover most of your honing duties? Should they work for most of the starting gouges that you recommend? Any other shapes or sizes you would recommend for someone starting out... I have limited local retail options, so I am trying to sleuth out an order and only want to pay shipping once, lol.
Hi Scott,
Glad you're enjoying the videos.
You could start with just the one slip stone that has a corner for the v-chisel and the other side rounded. Even though the curve won't fit all the insides of your gouges exactly, you can still run the slip stone along the inside of the curve. Just make sure the slip stone moves along and hits the entire inside edge of the gouge. One stone should work fine.
I'm enjoying your videos and am about to purchase a set of beginning tools. Woodcraft has Pfeil tools. They come in either 10" overall length or intermediate, 8" overall length. Does this make any difference? I'm a six foot size guy. Thanks.
Most of my gouges are the full 10" length. I feel it you get more control over them. When I do use the few 8" gouges I have, I feel like my hands are sort of cramped. Happy shopping!
I've been a woodworker since 1972 and used shellac and wax as a wood finish all that time, nice to see it come out in a carving lesson. you might want to try a wax from woodcraft.com called bry wax it is similar to shoe wax but comes in a larger can and in al larger selection of colors I generally use golden oak, walnut, and mahogany, and apply with a rag and or a tooth brush the same way Dan does in this vid.
