• From Luke Addington on Carving a Violin Scroll - Episode 2

    Hi Mary,

Great videos! I've been waiting for these to come out so I can incorporate these scrolls into some Dutch handplanes. I was wondering if you have a link to the image of the violin scroll you referred to throughout the videos?

    Thank you,
    -Luke

      Thanks Luke,
If you simply google "violin scroll image", you can find an amazing amount of photographs and drawings. This particular one was from https://violinmakerswife.wordpress.com/2012/10/14/the-magical-chiocciola-scroll/ and it also shows the traditional technique of sawing a lot of the shape.

Mary, I really enjoyed this video. You are so fast. It is hard appreciate how your upper hand does the cutting with your upper hand twist of the chisel. That motion doesn't show well in your videos. It is the secret to your technique. Your videos emphasize the lower hand and placement; but the upper hand is the key to learning your style. Thanks!!!!!

      Hi Steve,
Thanks! I have been aware of this need to take the occasional distant shot, and have been doing that in more of the recent videos. I am usually so focused on showing how the individual cuts are made that I do tend to focus much more close-up. Thanks for your suggestion, and I will work on showing a little more variety of close-up and distant. I just get so carried away with my carving - and sometimes forget that there is a video camera there! I'm just talking to myself while carving.

I'm still enchanted by any and all acanthus carving. The Norwegian acanthus, with its three levels, is still a challenge. Any chance you might tackle these?

      Hi Autumn,
Well... I haven't "officially" announced it yet, but I am writing a book (with video to go along with it) on carving the acanthus leaf. Many different varieties, and believe me, the varieties are endless. And yes, the Norwegian style is going to be a chapter (or 2). Lost Art Press (Christopher Schwarz's publishing company) will be the publisher. Please be patient - I plan on having it out by the end of next year. Yeah!

Do you prefer butternut to Basswood? Or does it really depends upon the carving?

This was a peach of a lesson.... especially noted the care you took around the tip of the leaf.. coming back in from the narrowest part of the point to the thicker part to preserve the shape.. and also the depth differences between the peach stem, the leaf stem and then the surface of the peach.. and you make it look so good.
