• From Wayne Heathfield on Carving a Dogwood Flower - Episode 1

    Hi Mary
I like to know if you would use laminated wood to do your carving or do you alwars use solid wood.

I use solid wood when I can. There have been times when I carve something and the wood I have available is not thick enough, so wood is glued up to make the stock thicker. There are also times where I cut out the carving on a band-saw or scroll saw and glue it on as an applique. Is this what you are referring to?

I have 3x3 stock of oak and was thinking of sawing them into 1x3 and joining them to make 1x9 or 1x12 boards and doing a carving like your dogwood flower.

I also like to thank you for your online school, I have learned so much from your videos and gotten so many ideas to add details to my projects.

Carving a dogwood out of oak - sound like work! But I'm sure it will be beautiful! Please put a photo of the finished piece on the student gallery when you get it finished.

I really don't have any idea how long it is going to take - several months or more? They have not given me a time-line yet. I wouldn't feel right about taking pre-orders, but just keep watching my blog and I'll also be putting into my newsletter and facebook page when the tools are ready.

File download times will vary depending on which of the files you want and what sort of connection you have. Note, our recent shift to using HD means not only striking detail, but larger file sizes to bring you that detail.

The HD version of this video is 526 MB.
The SD version this video is 168 MB.
The Mobile version of this video is 83 MB

The HD version will take 8-9 minutes on a moderately fast "cable" connection, longer via WiFi, MUCH longer on a DSL connection, and who knows how much longer on satellite based connections.

Which were you trying to download, and what sort of internet connection are you using?

Is anyone else having problems downloading this video? The first time I tried I got just under 4 minutes, the second time about 8 min 30 sec. Each time it is not being interrupted it says it is complete.

Thanks Mary. What are the length and width dimensions of this cross?
Also, how will you hold the cross for the filing you're going to do on the bandsawn edges?

The cross was 15" tall. You can make this any size by using the template that is available under the video.

I simply held it in my hand and against the edge of the bench. You could put it in the bench vise if you are very gentle with it (maybe put some foam padding between the vise and the carving). This would hold it more solid. Just make sure if you clamp it in any way that you don't crush the wood or damage the sharp carve parts.
