I am just starting to learn carving, I belong to a carving club and am having a ball. I also started with a flexcut set of tools. I desperately need to learn how to sharpen them, cotton wood bark really dulls the tools because of the sand etc. In it. I also have used oak, very hard, password and, my favorite, so far, butternut. I really am glad I found your website, and plan to continue with your lessons.
Ok, I'm a bit dense. Pfeil does make a # 3, 3mm straight gouge. I was looking at fishtail gouges. A 3mm fishtail would seem to be hard to do since it is so small. So far, I haven't found a # 8, 10mm Pfeil fishtail.

Fishtails are available in most brands starting from 5 or 6mm width. Also, #8 is usually the highest curvature (the higher the number the more curved). If Pfeil doesn't have a #8 fishtail, that's not that big of deal. Quite often the benefits of fishtails are in the #3 through #5 where they can really help in being able to get into tight areas with the sharp corners. Once they get a larger curve, that benefit of fishtails gets less. The larger the curvature, the less different between the straight and fishtail gouges.

I would like to be able to carve a drapery swag.
I tried to carve a draped cross (sometimes called a "Shrouded Cross") as a simple beginner's project, but after two tries the drapery is all wrong. Your "Drapery Style Linenfold Carving" video was helpful for hanging ends of drapery, but a swag is my downfall. Folds can shrink, sometimes to a mere split or nothing at all, or tuck under another fold. Help.

Charles, A beautiful example of something similar to what you are wanting to carve. Look at the areas where the drapery is sharp, where it is soft. Absolutely beautiful example of drapery with a linenfold end! Hope the link works. Let me know if it doesn't. Rheims Cathedral.
