I'm doing a carve along lesson, thank you. I love how linseed oil brings out basswood grain. I've. Used linseed prior to painting carvings as well as before applying polycrillic and it seems to work well. I haven't tried it before shellac though.
From what I understand about shellac (which is very limited), it can work with anything. Just make sure everything is completely dry so it doesn't interact with oils. Have fun!

Thank you! No, this is the closest I got to the fireplace back. I'm actually considering doing this design for it, though. I like it better than just the side view.
