Recently I have had a variety of teaching opportunities – both in classroom settings, and students coming to my workshop in Charleston. Since I haven’t posted about them, I’ll just cover them in one post (since I’m so far behind in this).
George Edwards and his wife enjoyed several days having the Charleston experience, and George spent some of those days at my workshop and really wanted to work on some challenging projects. He chose a beautiful acanthus scroll design in relief and a shell (in the style of the acanthus and shell design that I have a video for). They both turned out quite beautiful.
Mark Atkins also recently spent 5 days working with me in my workshop. He has a desire to carve full-time, and even expressed an interest in finding some carving workshop in Italy or France where he can just grasp as much as he can from the masters – working for free! Wow – I wish I had enough work to keep him busy…
Both George and Mark have created some beautiful carvings, and I am eager to see more.
So… it looks like the one-on-one carving at my workshop seems to be something that I am getting a lot of requests for. Sometimes groups of people get together and come to carve for a few days – sometimes just 1 person. I am pretty flexible, and what is nice about this type of teaching is that you can pick and choose whatever project you want to work on. Since I do not have a lot of commissions these days, this teaching out of my workshop seems to work out well.
So my hermit days are over. No more hiding in my workshop for days on end without seeing a human face. No more talking to myself (except when there is a video camera in front of me). No more going out into my shop in my pajamas and coffee and prepare for my work day. I guess that inevitable shift has happened – I must face interacting with human beings… it’s not really so bad… no, really…
