I recently finished a job for a church where I carved words for a mahogany memorial bench. The full words – IN MEMORIAM MARY B WILSON.
I set up the video camera where I showed how to carve the “ORIAM” in Memoriam. There was enough variety in those letters to show a lot of techniques of letter carving. Last week I added the first episode to my online school – Carving the “M” and “A”. Next week I will be adding the second episode – Carving the “I”, “R” and “O”.
Unfortunately I do not have a photo of the fully finished carving, but will post it when I do. However, I do have one of the preliminary photos with the lettering template attached. The circles represent where this “cross and circle” was carved (also a video on the online school). We decided not to include the center “cross and circle” design because it did not sit centered enough on the design. So the final design only had these crosses on each side of the design.
This was carved in sepele (some people put it in the category of mahogany) and it was surprisingly very good to carve. I’ve carved some sepele where its only use should have been heating our home. It certainly wasn’t fit for carving!
Happy Carving!
