My client wanted the shell more “scooped out” and hollow – more 3 dimensional, and wanted the scroll a little more delicate. So here is the updated shell. I hope this works for them.
I’m off to Greenville, SC tomorrow to teach another beginning carving class. It’s a full class of 12 students, and we will carve a basic relief carving of a floral design – it is mainly a class to get to understand how to use the gouges, how to sharpen them, how to work with wood grain, and how to give the appearance of 3-dimension in very shallow relief.
There seems to be a trend for depth and detail in your last several projects. Given the time and effort that level of relief must take, I hope customers understand that and don’t kick about the fees. The sconces are, of course, just beautiful and hopefully, their final placement will allow the light and shadow to show off that detail. I’m more than a little envious.
I’ve heard Greenville is a nice town. Hopefully you’ve enjoyed your time there. Do you have anything upcoming in the Atlanta area? If not, I know the right people to talk to about making that happen and I’d love to attend a class.
