The class on carving this classical design is online now through Popular Woodworking:
https://www.shopwoodworking.com/classical-carving-with-mary-may
The cost is $75, and it is about 2-1/2 hours of video with an introduction video which includes the tool sharpening process, a video on carving the acanthus leaf and also one on carving the shell. You can watch it as many times as you want over the next month, and if you have any questions, I will answer them either by e-mail, discussion group or video.
It is a really fun project to carve, and can be used as a decoration on many things – tops of mirrors, picture frames, above doors, or just a simple wall hanging all by itself.
I’m happy for you, I truly am, but I’m your student, not PopWood’s. I want to see more lessons in OUR school!
Hi David, Thanks for your feedback. Unfortunately, as a woodcarver in this economic climate, the only way to actually make a living doing this work is to diversify. These are simply the facts. I think many others who do woodworking as a living will agree that doing a combination of teaching/internet/selling/writing/(and sometimes carving) is often the only way it will work and still put food on the table.
More videos are on the way… please be patient! I’m working on putting the “dragon carving” on in a nearly unedited format. Should be interesting for those who want to watch 8 to 9 hours of carving acanthus leaves! I have a feeling the fast-forward button might be worn out a bit, and solve a lot of insomnia problems. Lots of others pending…
Mary,
Please don’t take what I said as any kind of criticism. I had my own business for many years, and fully understand, especially in these times, what it takes to make a living. As I said, I am truly happy for you for the opportunities you’ve had of late, and I mean that sincerely. I’m just being selfish, and want you all to myself :). Speaking of which, I do wish you would let us know before hand that you’re going to be in NH! Would love to meet you!
Patiently waiting for the LOOOOOONG dragon carving video!
David Taylor
No Thanks…
Good Luck!
