  • From Bert Holden on Removing Dents from Wood

    Mary,
I have an iron in my shop for just this purpose, to remove dents. It works very well. It’s faster than letting
water sit on the wood until the fibers swell.
Yesterday I used this procedure on my daughters front door damaged by her dogs claws.
It worked to some point. The door had a finish on it so there was no open grain. But the digs depth was reduced and not as noticeable.
I really enjoy your videos and lessens. After reviewing the free lessons I joined for the year.
Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing your knowledge.
    Bert

  • From Edouard Poitras on Carving a Donut - Beginner Lesson #6

I thoroughly enjoy watching your lessons Mary. After watching this video, it reminded me of the visual aid a few of the better instructors on Youtube have used- a taped up group of straws. By using this aid, it comes very clear what the grain is in wood and how it lays. If you were to cut an angle on one end to show the difference between short and long grain, it might help your students to understand how the grain will cut well cutting from short to longer grain and why it does not if reversed.
I look forward to more of your instruction and after I get my apprenticeship done with Paul Sellers, I will be joining you and you fantastic group.
    Best Wishes.

That was an update that was made to the website last year, and I probably should add a little reminder to the next newsletter. It really does help if you are looking for a particular category or topic.

  • From Robert Stoddard on Carving a Nautilus Shell

    Hi Mary
Instead of a light sanding, Could you use a card scraper? And you could make your own scrapers to the shape you need. Better then sanding. Card scrapers leave a much better surface, theen you don't have to sand.

      Hi Robert,
You certainly could use custom-shaped scrapers and yes, the surface would create a much nicer surface. It does get challenging with all the different shapes and curves, but can definitely be done.
