  • From Bob Hachmann on All About Gouges

I always wondered what tools were the most important to a carver. Thanks for sharing what I should consider having.
Also, how to properly hold the tool for a controlled cut explains why the length of the blade is important. You give very helpful advice.

    Thanks for what you do!

  • From Wildwood Flower Dulcimers on Carving a Violin Scroll - Episode 1

    Hi MM,
Nice job. The videos give a firm grasp of the process. But, there is something missing. There are no photos or video showing the carved scroll as incorporated into the violin neck. Its a nice stand alone sculpture but I am left on my own to figure out how to build it in. I realize this is not a build a violin website but this same concept applies to so many different carvings. A few additional photos of carvings as used and attached to main project would be very helpful.
You are a fantastic artisan! Thanks for the great videos!

    • From Mary May on Carving a Violin Scroll - Episode 1

Thank you! I certainly don't claim to be a violin maker, as the master violin makers take years to achieve these skills. I am assuming that the scroll and the neck would be one piece of wood. As you mentioned, this is really more to show the method I used to achieve the scroll. Traditionally, they would use a saw to prepare the scroll, and again their technique has been passed down through the generations. I wouldn't want to stir things up and interfere with a traditional technique by guessing... I was just having fun and enjoying a challenging project 🙂
