• From John Schutz on Carving a Country Scene - Episode 1

It is extra-instructive to hear your thoughts, comments as you make adjustments. There are several species of mahogany--some are lighter/darker than others. Have you any preference? Looking forward to the next episodes. Thank you!!!

Thanks, John. It is so difficult to find good mahogany these days. If you can find any South American mahogany, that is the best, but much of that is restricted. The "African" mahogany (sometimes referred to as sapele) can be very dense and grain quite difficult. The "Philippine" mahogany is usually light and soft. They seem like completely different woods, but still put into the mahogany category. Have fun!

Great lesson Mary. I build furniture and will add this to my collection of molding designs. Thank you for making these lessons so clear and personal.

I like the little "ghost" or "angle" that appears right at the end. I had to rewind and make sure my eyes were not playing tricks on me.

Awesome work. Thanks for a great lesson. If you carve a smaller cross section how do you scale down the chisels?? Say a 3/8" section rather than 3/4"?

Thanks Rob! My suggestion would be to reduce everything in proportion, lay it out on your wood, and do some testing. That's how I resolve unknown tool size issues. Do a test run, try several different sized and curved gouges, and this will also be a good place to get those subtle techniques down before putting it into your final edge. And have fun!

  • From Reuben Crutchley on Carving a Concave Scallop Shell - Episode 2

Hi Mary, both of the lessons on the scallop shell were excellent, well done, I hope to be as good a carver yourself one day. My carvings are going to the USA, also the Russian Federation, they're more in the round at present, but I'll be preparing for a relief carving very soon. Your lessons have given me courage to work in relief, something I haven't tried as yet, once again, many thanks for your excellent classes, I enjoy them immensely.

    Reuben.
