• From Kt on Carving an Acanthus Leaf on a Cabriole Leg - Episode 1

    Hello Mary,

I am really enjoying your website and how much it offers. This note is concerning the same thing Jim Brower addressed in his email. Like him I am having trouble visualizing the design and know the correct way to attach the knee blocks. Bore and dowel works well usually but with the carving on this block I need a set of the same photos you are locating for Jim. A pattern would be a great help too, Hope to hear from you soon.

    • From Mary May on Carving an Acanthus Leaf on a Cabriole Leg - Episode 1

      Hi Kim,

I'm glad you're enjoying the videos.

You can access printable patterns under the episode 1 of each lesson. The pattern also includes the knee block. Unfortunately, at this point (since this project was finished several years ago and is long out of my workshop) I do not have photos of the fully finished leg.

Any time I have attached knee blocks, it has simply been glue. The knee blocks are not structural, and do not need the strength from dowels, etc. There may be others who know more about the "building" of the furniture, but from what several period furniture makers have mentioned to me, they also simply glue the knee block.

I hope to do another lesson with a different acanthus design on the knee, and will complete this with the knee block in place.

      Hope this helps!

  • From David Piazzo on Carving Reeds on a Table Leg

Mary, months into your online school I watched this for the first time today. You are fearless. Before I started your classes I would not have had a clue how to do this and seen this project as so difficult. But your lessons are such confidence builders. Now I want to try and make a table with these kinds of legs. Love how you used the lathe to get the spacing! Thank you !

I love to see the problems that occur and how to deal with them, they are the most important parts for me. Thanks for not editing them out.

  • From Ernie Balch on Carving a Cardinal "In the Round" - Episode 3

It is fascinating to see someone carve a bird without using a knife or rotary tool. I was thinking you would have to use a carvers screw into the belly in order to get access to all sides but you managed with out it.
