• From David Piazzo on Carving a Large Sunburst - Episode 2

I am still working on completing one of each scroll. But I had to jump ahead because I was fascinated with this lesson. You, Mary May have so much skill... it is obvious you can feel the wood and what its doing, what it wants to do, and when it will fight you, you have solutions.. Need to watch this lesson, both parts again when I am ready to try. I am building a blanket chest that has poplar panels.. may just give this a go for the center panel..

David, I love to see excited and motivated students! It gets me more motivated do make more and varied lessons. When you are finished with your projects, please add photos to the student gallery. I would love to see them and it will give others ideas of how to incorporate these designs into their work. Thanks!

Thank you for your answer, I finished my donut and because I have a project coming up with a "50" in it I added a 5 to the donut.. for practice. You are such a good teacher, I think about the donut grain lessons all the time.

Bought a dozen quality chisels and gouges today... Tomorrow I am going to start the scroll.

Thank you so much for your answer and the tip on not using good tools on sanded wood.

GREAT project! It has been a challenge, especially, since I've been slacking the last few months.

I've learned two new design techniques:

DAWG - Design As We Go

    and

DOE - Design On Error (When I got the sides of the petals reversed from what Mary did and had to ad lib ... )

Glad you're getting back into it and that you're healing up. Think of sharpening as a sort of physical therapy to get you back into carving!
