• From Bob Easton on Carving a Dogwood Flower - Episode 1

We live near forest lands. Driving through the lands in early spring often finds the dogwoods absolutely enchanting. The limbs of dogwood trees are so thin and wispy that they almost disappear into the busy background of all the rest of the forest. That leaves hundreds upon hundreds of white flowers seemingly floating in space.

Go closer and find that every flower is similar but unique, curling and twisting in its own way.

THANKS for showing how to carve some of those variations!

Bob, I'm sure you will enjoy the challenge of carving a dogwood flower. There are no rules! They can go any direction and any shape. Just have fun with it and see where it goes!

Thanks. I do understand the problem...that's probably why I think it would be great! I certainly know you can't do a 40 hour video, but wouldn't that be something? 🙂 I'd probably get a block of wood and follow you all the way through the 40 hours....

I would love to see some lessons on carving in the round. You show absolutely beautiful sculptures in your gallery and it would be great if you could do some simple ones in a class.

Earl - So would I! I think the main difficulty is the time that it takes to carve "in-the-round" takes so much longer than the relief carvings. There are times when I carve 3-dimensional pieces and it can take 4 or 5 days (thats 30 to 40 hours of video). I will try to get some videos that can be shortened.
