Thanks! This particular video really should be watched after the regular egg and dart molding in oak which goes over the specific cuts in detail and more close-up. This one really goes over the production process of doing it quickly, so my focus was on getting as many hits in as possible in the shortest amount of time as possible - and as a result, not as much talking (or talking at the same time as using the mallet). Sometimes it's fun just to do a challenge to see how quickly you can do a length of molding, and hope that by the end it looks something like what it should!
Also, woods. You mention some of the issues in individual videos, but what woods would be a good (and hopefully inexpensive) choice for practicing while we learn the basics?

I know this is an old post, but I wasn't here then! wood-databse is awesome for learning about different species. Woodcarving Illustrated also has good information, I think it's where I found the piece on carving woods and their colors, especially how the color changes over time.
You mentioned the pros and cons of the brass and wood mallets a bit. But what about the polyurethane one you had on the bench? I'm guessing it isn't your favorite since you ignored it completely. 😉
Hmmmm - I think you might be referring to the one with the lighter colored handle (at the far right on the screen)? That is actually a dark turned wood mallet. The screen color has some unfortunate tint. Working on that...
By the way, polyurethane mallets work fine. Whatever gets the mallet through the wood. I actually had one once, and I used it to really hog out a lot of wood on one job, and the plastic broke apart - that was a lot of pounding! Now that mallet is a simple wood mallet 🙂
