• From JOE LAMBERT on Carving an Acanthus Leaf on a Turned Post - Episode 1

    Mary:

really enjoyed the acanthus leaf carving of the turned base of the table. I think the value of your rss feeds for me would be for me to be able to copy for reference at a later date when I get into a specific project. Will you be offering a way to download the feeds or copied units for later reference. I always enjoy when there are ways to create a reference library. I have a lot of carving tools but having you show the tools used is a great way to understand better what is an ideal tool to gets specific results. thanks for offering this manner in learning how to carve

  • From Mary May on Carving Egg & Dart Molding - "Production Mode"

Thanks! This particular video really should be watched after the regular egg and dart molding in oak which goes over the specific cuts in detail and more close-up. This one really goes over the production process of doing it quickly, so my focus was on getting as many hits in as possible in the shortest amount of time as possible - and as a result, not as much talking (or talking at the same time as using the mallet). Sometimes it's fun just to do a challenge to see how quickly you can do a length of molding, and hope that by the end it looks something like what it should!

Another subject for beginners like myself could be the carving environment.

    Bench(s)
    Workholding (vises, clamps, screws, etc)
    Lighting
Standing vs sitting (do you ever sit on a stool while carving?)

Also, woods. You mention some of the issues in individual videos, but what woods would be a good (and hopefully inexpensive) choice for practicing while we learn the basics?

        Mike,
Good idea. On some of the individual videos I discuss the wood, but I think a video on what woods are goot to carve is in the future. Thanks!
