Is 5/8" thick enough for the 'Getting Started' lessons?

I see some basswood for sale that's 11x9 and 5/8". Is that thick enough for the beginner lessons? I believe most recommendations were at a full inch thick, so thought I'd ask.

Hello Danny,
So sorry for the delay in answering this. Somehow it got lost.
Any relief carvings (where the background is lowered) really can be any thickness - just as long as you don't take the carving down so deep that you pierce the background! 1 inch is just simple, and since most only go down 1/8 inch, any thickness of wood will work.
