The depth of the carving can be 1/8" to 3/16" deep at the outside edges. Be careful not to make these rays too deep, or the sharp corners will become fragile.

My supplier in Wisconsin, Wilcox Wood (http://wilcoxcarvingwood.com/) sells butternut and is currently in Florida for the winter, but should be back early March. He sells beautiful basswood and butternut. The thickness can be anywhere from 3/4" to 1-1/4" and use the same technique shown in the lesson. The dimensions for each lesson are listed several places. They are listed on the page with the introduction video, at the beginning of the Episode 1 video, and they are also listed on the template that you can print out.
