• From Paul Squillace on Carving Oak Leaves

Hi Mary May, I have watched many of your videos and you are obviously a very talented wood carver. One thing that I have noticed about carving is that I can do a mediocre carving, but bringing it to the very good level is difficult. It involves paying attention to small details and very subtle curves. It would be helpful to me, if you could discuss these details more in your videos. You do this some already, but more discussion would be helpful. Anyway, thanks for your help. Paul

      Hi Paul,
Thanks for your suggestion. I will make a point of focusing on this more in the lessons. It really ends up being a result of time with gouges in hand. The more you carve, the more natural it becomes to make that final surface.

  • From BARRETT BAILEY on Sharpening a Veiner Gouge

I am a retired high school teacher and grammatical and typographical errors always jump out at me. Your description of this video reads

"We will... learn how to challenging technique of sharpening this special tool."

Perhaps you intended to " learn how to MASTER THIS challenging..." or something similar? Love your work and teaching techniques.

  • From Pamela Campbell on Carving a Peach

Enjoyed this lesson. However, I had a very disjointed - in and out - reception. Got through it though and can not wait to do my first peach. Cheers and thank you.

Hello Pamela. I'm glad you enjoyed the lesson. That "stuttering" is often an internet connection issue. Have you tried to download it and watch it offline?

      Happy Carving!

  • From Ralph Hausman on Carving a Linenfold Panel - Episode 2

Mary ... don't know why I couldn't save the original linenfold programs before, but here they are now and I have been able to download both ... standard download formats are fine as that is how I have been downloading the others I am saving ... really appreciate being able to have them to replay away from my office desktop (and to be able to pause as/whenever I need to) .... thanks, ralph

  • From Brian on Carving a Celtic Cross

I have used a knife a lot in my past carving experience. Is there any reason i can't or shouldn't use a knife instead of a gouge for the setting in step? I am a visual learner and love your teaching style. I am as excited about discovering your online classes as a kid in a candy store.

If you are used to using a knife, then go for it! I just am not comfortable teaching this method, as I have never really learned the technique. It seems that whenever I get a carving knife in my hand, something gets cut - other than the wood 🙂

Happy carving - and BE CAREFUL!
