• From Lawrence Kerr on Starting to Carve - Beginner Lesson #2

    Hi Mary,

Can walnut be used for springerle? I am wondering about carving difficulty and cookie taste/unmolding both.I am a beginner and have some walnut, but could by some cherry. I love your lessons!
    Thank you.
    Larry

Hi Mary, I was thinking of using this design as the center panel for a vanity door in an old timey bathroom. It would be painted as well. Would basswood be too soft?

      Hi Marsha,
The nice thing about this design is that it doesn't have to be a fireplace. It can be a center design for many things. I think that would work well with your idea. And yes, basswood will probably be MUCH easier to carve than poplar. Have fun! Add a photo to the student gallery when you finish!

Mary, i am looking for a design for a window valance over my bay window. I was thinking that this design could be elongated for the larger center window and the repeated designs over the other two side windows.
Do you think this is too identifiable as a fireplace design to be used as a valance?

      Hi Carolyn,
I think that would look great! The design may end up being too tall, but the fluted design can certainly be shortened and lengthened. You would just have to adjust it to fit, but the design itself doesn't specifically need to be for a fireplace. I love the way you are thinking! When you are finished, please add it to the student gallery.

There are several places that I know of:.WOODCRAFT, which has many stores. Their site = WOODCRAFT.com. A second source would be The Woodcraft Shop in Bettendorf, IA; woodcraftshop.com. These guys are not connected, despite the similarity in names. The knife-like riffler comes in a set of 5-6 different shape, all very useful. Both sources have great people who know carving.

Where can you find the small, knife-like, riffler?
