Wall plaque

Hello

I’ve just finished a small wall plaque which I really enjoyed carving.  I think making some similar but much bigger would be such an enjoyable project but I can never find larges pieces of wood. If anyone knows of a good website where I can purchase suitable wood please let me know (I’m based in the uk - Kingston upon Thames).  I would be so happy to hear from you!  And I do wish more people would share pictures of their carving projects too as I seem to be posting rather a lot!

Hi Lucy,

Thank you for contributing so much to the forum! I also hope that people will add more photos and get involved in discussions, as I don't often get to interact with people and see what they are working on. It gets sort of lonely over here on this side of the camera!

That is really a beautiful carving. Are you familiar with the carving magazine in the UK? Woodcarving illustrated? They may be able to tell you where to purchase carving wood.  Lime wood or Linden is the best (basswood here in the US), but it does seem difficult to find. Also you might want to try and find a local carving club, group or guild and they can also give you information about where to find supplies.

Good luck, and keep up the good work!! Please don't stop adding photos.

You know I’m a subscriber to Woodcarving Illustrated and never thought to look for wood sellers in there. Thanks!  I do wish we had a local carving group nearby for help and inspiration but they seem to be more countryside based.  eBay is often a good way to find wood but the wider pieces are terribly expensive.  I’ve done many carvings long and thin lol!

Thanks for your feedback, I will continue to post.

That is a beautiful carving Lucy! Love the details and precise, clean chisel work. Keep  up the great work! What kind of wood and finish did you use?

Hi Randy

Thank you so much!

It’s mahogany but I’ve stained it with ‘Jacobean oak’ which is a dark wood stain.  i think you get a cleaner finish the harder the wood.  It’s a lot more challenging when working with basswood to get rid of all those chisel marks and little wood fussies.
