Hawaiian canoe relief

PreviousPage 2 of 2

I finally was able to finish the Hawaiian canoe relief. I first sealed the carving with a mixture of acetone and polyurethane. This mixture prevents finish (next step) from being absorbed and ruining carving or drying to quickly. Once dry (24 hours) I mixed 2 different oil paints with a small amount of acetone and brushed on entire carving. Next I wiped off finish with rag and dry paint brush. Using a drop of acetone removes finish even more until desired look is achieved. This was my first attempt using this method but was confident I wouldn’t ruin carving.  If anyone is interested in formula for sealing and finishing feel free to contact me. Well, happy carving everyone and time to figure out what to carve next!
