I’d like to attempt scroll and rosette,is that genuine mahogany?2 1/2″ thick? about 4′ long for the whole piece”
Hi Mark,
The thickness is 1-1/4″ thick, and genuine Honduras mahogany. I realize this is not on the template. Sorry about that. There are parts of this detail that are not carved as a lesson, but other lessons similar show techniques of carving the acanthus leaves such as https://www.marymaycarving.com/carvingschool/2017/07/05/the-colonial-charleston-fireplace-part-4-carving-a-rococo-acanthus-frieze/ and https://www.marymaycarving.com/carvingschool/2017/03/08/the-colonial-charleston-fireplace-undermantle-center-panel-carving-a-rococo-acanthus-introduction/
I’m not at my workshop, but 4 feet sounds close. Please email me in about 2 weeks when I get back home to check full size of this carving.
Have fun!
I have a 49″x8x1 3/4″ piece of real mahogany.I hope that covers it.as soon as I finish the fruit and flower basket.looking forward to mahogany.
Hi Mark,
You may have to add another 1/2″ or so for the thickness of the Scroll and Rosette. 1-1/4″ should give you plenty of wood for that section.
The scroll and rosette along with the rest of the fireplace,is it all done in one piece?
Hi Mark,
No, they were done separately. It would be very difficult to cut that long of a piece on a scroll saw, so I strategically cut the pieces where the joined areas wouldn’t show. Also, it would be difficult to find a nice, clean piece of mahogany that large.
